Beasts in the High Seas - Bestias en la Alta Mar

I was a little scared I wouldn’t be able to make it to the Outer Banks this year, with other commitments in the Spring and passport issues later on (which resolved the day before I was set to travel) but I managed to squeeze through.

It was fantastic. The first day, off Wanchese, started with a beautiful sunrise.

The weather was calm and so was the sea.  On our way out, a big gray thing floated past the boat. It took me a while, until the great beast lifted its head – and then I shouted –

“LEATHERBACK!”

"BAULA!"

LEV_1503

The largest of all turtles. An incredible wanderer, brought out here by abundant food resources brought in by the cold water. The only reptile capable of internal thermoregulation. This individual may end up on a beach in Trinidad, Suriname, or French Guiana…or, if it was a male, never touch land again.

After a couple of breaths, the beast dove. My lifer Leatherback. A gap on my bucket list, filled, if only by a few brief moments.

I let the turtle sink in for a while. I had tried, and failed, to see these turtles before in Costa Rica and a handful of other places. It was one of those animals that I’ve always wanted, but never thought I’d see, as a child. I’m not one to get anything except excited over animal sightings, but this one stirred my soul for a long time.

We ended up seeing nine more. A record for offshore trips. We also saw some excellent (albeit nothing exceptionally rare) birds, and offshore Bottlenose and Spotted Dolphins as well as many Short-finned Pilot Whales.

The second day was too windy to go out, but the third day can only be described as “epic”.

Short-finned Pilot Whales - Ballenas Pilotos

I stood on the bow of the Stormy Petrel II. The wind was high. The sky was black. Lightning occasionally permeated the otherwise featureless horizon.  The sea was tossing us around like a cork. Warm Gulf Stream water rained on us.  The sea was having its way with us, and there was nothing we could do about it. Some people crawled with seasickness into the cabin. I don’t get to do this enough to have done that.  If nobody else is, I’m eating the whole cake.

LEV_1896

We were in the middle of a beehive. Yellowfin Tuna were driving baitfish to the surface, bringing them close enough so that birds were able to dive and feed on them. And were there ever birds.  Sky, water, birds, and nothing else.  Miles in the open sea.

LEV_1978

I was alone on the bow, sopping wet and tossing around like a rag doll. A Black-capped Petrel slid up the boat, riding the wind effortlessly, paused briefly enough for us to make eye contact, changed the shape of its wings, and disappeared into the dark.

I don’t believe in a God, but I believe in something, and this was it.

It was a great time spent with great friends, old and new. We saw some excellent birds, including Trindade Petrel which was a new bird for a lot of the group (including myself!) I don't get to spend time with Brian and Kate (http://seabirding.blogspot.ca/) very often, and I don't see ANY shearwaters or petrels in Ontario, and I love being offshore in general. Everyone had a great time (when they weren't throwing up on that third day...).  OBX....I will be back. Soon.

Pronto.

Dances with Wolves - Bailando con Lobos

Every park has one iconic animal associated with it that nobody ever gets to see. Everyone knows that Black-footed Ferrets exist in Grasslands National Park, but who ever sees one? Southern Flying Squirrels have an entire book dedicated to them at Point Pelee National Park, but do people ever see flying squirrels there? Rarely.

Algonquin has one too – the Eastern Wolf. Of the dozens and dozens of books, magazines, newspaper articles, postcards and memorabilia that exist of Algonquin’s wolves, very few lucky folks actually get to lay eyes on one of the dogs. If anything, they would be lucky to hear their ghostly howls at night.

I’ve been lucky in the wolf department – in the five years that I’ve worked and lived here I have seen more than my fair share of the canines – usually driving around at night. This is by far the way most people see their wolves, just illuminated briefly in the headlights as the cross or walk alongside Highway 60.

I’ve also been lucky enough to see wolves feeding on a kill off the viewing deck in the Winter, and this Spring I had an encounter with a wolf – a lone animal on the ice at Cache Lake in the golden evening light. I was outside of my car, quite close to the wolf, and saw it for a good minute or so before it walked away, not paying any attention as with all other typical wolf encounters. It was my best encounter with a wolf, until a couple of days ago when two co-workers and I were out.

This story is entirely true but I have to mention a few things before I tell it. Remember that all of my co-workers and me are naturalists by profession and we have the knowledge and training necessary to be in the field, in close contact with these things without getting hurt.  We know what goes on. If we had done what we did without years of experience doing this for a living, someone could have been seriously injured. Don’t try and do what we did, and don’t ask where it took place. I had the wrong lens on my camera, so the pictures are not very good, but they are proof!

Everyone had finished dinner and it had come to decide what the after-dinner activity was to be. People elected to watch TV or sit on laptops, but three of us wanted to get out and explore so we took my car and drove over to the railway bed. It was closed, due to an accident, so instead we elected to go to a restricted, staff-only access area a bit in the interior.

LEV_9125

We got there, and immediate sign of large carnivores was evident. Bears were apparently out and about as well. We waited a while and looked at some insects, when suddenly, without provocation, some wolf pups started howling.

We pinpointed where it was, and it was near a large opening which contained a fenced-in maintenance unit. We left the car, and climbed up on a bluff that overlooked the open field.

LEV_9134

Then, a big wolf pup came ambling out of the grass!! It stood around about 80 feet away and watched us watching it – it was one of my co-workers first time seeing a wolf, and what a view! It started going off into the woods so we squeaked to get it’s attention back – and it came back and had another look before taking off.

LEV_9141

We decided in order to see if there were other wolves in the area, to howl and see if we get a response.  Again, common sense dictates that if you don’t know what you’re doing, please don’t do this. And even if you do, it might not be the best idea.

Immediately, an enormous adult wolf, likely the Alpha, swiftly trotted out of the grass and headed directly towards us, following the fence line of the maintenance unit and into the woods.

We were shaking with excitement, and gave another howl. The wolf, which had gone into the woods, was now on the bluff, immediately opposite of us, about 60 feet away. And then, it looked straight at us and howled as well – a low, intimidating howl characteristic of the alpha that sends chills down your spine.  Again, eyes locked on us, the wolf then started barking! I had never heard a wolf bark, and it’s a pretty frightening experience, let me tell you… it barked at us a few times and retreated into the woods.

LEV_9176

Buzzing with excitement, we were high-fiving and cursing and dancing around each other like children, and gathered to look at the photos I had taken, when we heard some crackling about 30 feet into the bush, directly behind us.

We convinced ourselves that it was a chipmunk, and continued, but then I heard a low growl and it was obviously not. The growl increased in volume and turned into barking, about 30 feet away, which was extremely alarming.

Screen shot 2013-07-18 at 9.55.30 AM

We swiftly made it into the fenced in area, and could hear the mobbing Blue Jays and chickadees following the wolf as it made it’s way around us. I saw it briefly dash through the woods. It crossed the access road, and we heard it retreat.

That was our wolf adventure. We were detected, and actually engaged by a wild wolf – an experience that naturalists dream about (and some people have nightmares about).

In retrospect, the animal was likely not going to hurt us. It didn’t want to eat us, it was just having a look at a potential threat and reacting to it with aggression, to drive it away to it’s territory and young. We imitated a wolf and it was behaving towards us as it would to an intruding wolf, which was amazing to see and experience. In the way that we handled the situation, there was very little danger to us and we knew what to expect (but it was still pretty damn scary!)

And so, another day went by in the life of some Algonquin naturalists. What will be the next great adventure?

Summer - Verano

Algonquin is in the depths of its summer season.  It’s a beautiful place. The birds are in the depths of fledging their broods, the days are sunny and periodically, huge low-pressure weather systems roll through the Park, providing a spectacular light and sound show in the form of massive thunderstorms.

The Park blushes green with plant life and the canopy shades the understory.

The rockin’ beats of the dawn bird chorus subside. They are busy. The Park, however, is far from quiet, as the chorus is replaced in the heat of the day by the gentle purr of numerous Okanagana cicadas.

It’s a season to wind down and watch the Northwoods make the most of its peak productive season.  The changes that will occur in the coming weeks will be subtle. The Okanaganas will die off to make room for the louder droning of the Tibicen cicadas. A new fleet of night-singing insects will emerge. New plants will come into bloom. Birds will start heading back south.

I myself have not moved too much out of the Park since I’ve arrived, save for small day trips here and there, in an effort to save some cash.  Real life… it’s tough stuff! Big changes have taken place, but some comforting thoughts remain, including the fact that I will be able to make it into the open ocean this year in August.

Besides, there are worse places to be stuck!

Además, hay sitios peores que ser pegado!

Haunted Algonquin - Búsqueda de Fantasmas

Hey folks! There's going to be a big change in The Spruce Blog starting with this post, and that is the fact that each post will now be in two languages - English and Spanish. My Spanish audience is increasing and online translators are crap, and in my own effort to learn Spanish, the Spruce Blog will now be bilingual! I'd like to thank Verena Goldbach for giving me the idea with her own blog (http://germanatalgonquin.wordpress.com/) which is in both English and German.

Hola Amigos!

It's been a pretty typical Spring here in Algonquin Park, with cool temperatures and clouds of blackflies making a notable presence, unlike last year, which was lacking in either of those two respects.

Spring is often a busy time for us here, especially the Group Ed crew because many school groups want to get here before the bugs and that usually means we've got our hands full every day. We make hay while the sun shines, and the sun don't shine for long here.

I did get some free time this Spring and made use of it by looking for some early Spring insects (and feeding the blackflies). These are ones that usually have short flying seasons in the Park, likely due to freak weather that drops them shortly after they emerge (which is not uncommon) They live hard, fast lives.

One of these is a small dragonfly that is rarely observed by naturalists - it inhabits the depths of spruce bogs and breeds in small pools of water at the bases of spruce trees and other tiny wetlands. It only flies for a short period of time in May-June - a time when not many naturalists are looking for dragonflies, which are usually more prominent later in the year. The name of this creature conveys it all - the Ebony Boghaunter.

Verena Goldbach and I had a free afternoon and went out to a known location to try and bust some bog ghosts.

LEV_5357

Ebony Boghaunter - Fantasma Negra

Blackflies were definitely out. As were dragonflies - we caught a couple of Hudsonian Whitefaces, American Emeralds and some fresh Corporals.
I swung at a small dragonfly that was flying low, expecting it to be a whiteface of sorts, but through the net I saw it... a female Ebony Boghaunter! High fives were in order as we examined this beautiful spectre of the spruces, a dragonfly I had not seen since 2009. It was the only one we saw.

Moscas negras eran definitivamente.

We were also looking for Elfins, small members of the hairstreak family of butterflies. They fly early, and the caterpillars of both Eastern and Western Pine Elfins are unique as they are some of the very few caterpillars that eat Pine and Spruce. The two elfin species are quite similar, and we saw many of both species.

LEV_5348

Eastern Pine Elfin - Elfo Oriental

LEV_5408

Western Pine Elfin - Elfo Occidental

The main difference between these two is the jagged vertical line on the hindwing. In Western Pine Elfin, the triangles formed by this line are very pointy, while in the Eastern, the peaks are usually quite blunt.

Of course, one cannot refrain from birding while in Algonquin and while most were only heard, the highlight here was a Spruce Grouse eating buds up in a tree.

Another early an exceptionally interesting butterfly found in Algonquin is the Chryxus Arctic. This is a butterfly one can find in open areas with lots of reindeer lichen - the Old Airfield -

Chryxus Arctic - Artico Chryxus

Check out how well camouflaged this animal is - it is quite incredible. Arctics of all species are dark butterflies - this is an evolutionary trait that has likely occurred due to the fact that all of these species live in colder climates and darker animals warm up faster than pale ones. Boghaunters have also evolved to become dark as well, as they fly early and in cold weather.

Besides the small and intricately patterned glory that inhabits the park during Spring, of course there is also a whole bunch of baby big furry creatures for the crowds to gawk at -
